IELTS - International English Language Testing System
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) assesses your English language skills and is accepted worldwide. It’s often the first step toward studying or working abroad, with over 10,000 institutions and organizations recognizing the test. IELTS is also accepted for immigration purposes globally.
Purpose of IELTS
IELTS checks your ability to communicate effectively with native speakers in the country where you plan to study or work.
About the Test
- The test lasts 3 hours and evaluates your speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills.
- It includes a face-to-face speaking section with a native English examiner.
- IELTS is designed by a team of experts to provide a fair and reliable assessment.


About the Test
There are two types of IELTS :

IELTS Academic:
For those pursuing higher education or seeking professional registration abroad. -
IELTS General Training :
For immigration, studying in a school or college abroad, or working overseas.
IELTS for UK Immigration (UKVI)
IELTS is accepted for immigration to the UK, and there is a specific UKVI test for visa applicants. The test format is the same, but UKVI tests are monitored by CCTV or video recording.
IELTS Life Skills
This is for people who need to prove their English skills to work or study in the UK. It includes three levels :
A1 : For family visas
A2 : For visa extensions
B1 : For indefinite leave or citizenship applications
IELTS Results
Results are available in 13 days.
Valid for 2 years.

CCEL offers a range of English courses in Christchurch and Auckland, including General English, Business English, Cambridge Exam Preparation, and English for Academic Purposes (EAP). Students can pathway into leading institutions in New Zealand, including the University of Canterbury and other partner schools.
English Pathways
Successful completion of the EAP course at CCEL (with meeting academic requirements) allows students to enter the University of Canterbury or other institutions without taking IELTS.
